My hermie... [Jul. 3rd, 2007|10:01 pm]
Hermit Crab Lovers!

Meet "Brutus"

I bought Brutus two days ago. He's a newbie in my house. I've owned a total of about 6 or 7 hermies, but they've all passed :( This time around, I chose to get one hermit crab so I could prevent shell fights/stress from which I think a lot of my others died before.
I chose the name Brutus because the entire way home, he was fighting so hard to get out of his little box they gave me at the pet store. I love Roman themes stuff, so I guess that explains it. It was either Brutus or Leonitus from 300!

Anyway, tomorrow I am off to find Brutus a nice climbing toy at the pet store because I think his tank is too empty. He still hasn't figured out how to use his climbing wall. He actually prefers to sleep behind it.

He's super quick and is absolutely hyper!

Hermit Crab Lovers!

i know there's only two of us, but i figured i'd make an introuction post :)

my name is risu, and i've been crabbing for 4 years.

this is scuttle. i've had her since the beginning (four years ago). the shell next to her is the one i origionally purchased her in. they grow up so fast :)

i currently have 6 purple pinchers and one ruggie. all the PP's are in my 20 gallon tank, and due of some agression from scuttle towards peach, the ruggie is with my brother's PPs in his 10 gallon. i have a 30 gallon tall i hope to set up during the summer, before i become a poor college student ::hehe:: i have big plans for that tank, i'll be sure to post pictures!

Hermit crabs are decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea [1], not closely related to true crabs. Most hermit crabs salvage empty seashells to shelter and protect their soft abdomens, from which they derive the name "hermit". There are about five hundred known species of hermit crabs in the world, most of which are aquatic, living at a range of depths from shallow coral reefs and shorelines to deep sea bottoms, although some species are terrestrial. A number of species, most notably king crabs, have abandoned seashells for a free-living life; these species have forms similar to true crabs and are known as carcinised hermit crabs. Hermit crabs live in the wild in colonies of 100 or more, and do not thrive in smaller numbers.
